To mark Earth Day 2024, the Youth Hostels launched an awareness campaign dedicated to bird conservation on behalf of the Royal Belgian League for the Protection of Birds (LRBPO). The goal: to foster a better understanding of biodiversity issues and encourage simple actions that anyone can take.
An initiative that continued to bear fruit in the years that followed.

As part of this ongoing campaign, several birdhouses were installed in 2025 at various youth hostels. These birdhouses, purchased through the LRBPO website, now provide suitable nesting sites for certain species, particularly in areas where such sites are scarce.
A concrete way to build on the initiative launched the previous year, moving from raising awareness to taking visible action on the ground.

This project was made possible thanks to the involvement of the Youth Hostel teams and our travelers. Through their interactions, their interest, and their donations, they helped bring this initiative to life.

This year, in celebration of Earth Day 2026, we’re launching a new campaign with a different approach: giving out packets of flower seeds to our travelers.
The goal of this initiative is to bring flowers back to our regions and help protect butterflies and pollinating insects, which play a vital role in our ecosystem. Want to learn more about our 2026 initiative? Find out more here.

Youth Hostels continue to offer environmental initiatives throughout the seasons and as part of various projects.
Whether by staying at our hostels or learning about our work on the ground, everyone can get involved in their own way.
